GEOG 101: Earth’s Physical Environment
GEOG 574: Water Resources. Water is vital for human well-being and ecosystems. Population growth, climate change, pollution, ecosystem degradation and poverty all present challenges for managing water resources. This course covers multiple ways of analyzing water as a resource and hazard, including hydrology, ecology, socioeconomics, health, and politics. We will cover water resources in urban and agricultural environments, climate change impacts on water resources, water in international economic development, and water quality.
GEOG 576 Advanced Watershed Analysis introduces the theory and techniques for analyzing watershed processes, including surface water hydrology, water quality, and geomorphology. Tools include geographic information systems (GIS), statistical analysis (R software package), and simple hydrological models. Weekly hands-on exercises include analysis of rainfall-runoff relationships, water quality, sediment budgets, and stream morphology during urbanization. Examples of the exercises in R can be found here.
- Prerequisites: GEOG 101 or 370 are encouraged. Prior experience with GIS (GEOG 484 or equivalent) and/or programming (GEOG 582) is encouraged.
